Join us for a compelling discussion with Dr. Lindsey Stewart, whose book The Conjuring of America: Mojos, Mermaids, Medicine, and 400 Years of Black Women’s Magic illuminates the powerful, often hidden legacy of Black women’s spiritual and cultural traditions. Stewart traces the stories of enslaved Mammies, Voodoo Queens, Blues Women, Granny Midwives, and textile weavers who preserved their practices through secrecy and resistance, shaping American life in ways both extraordinary and everyday—from folk medicines that inspired modern remedies to cultural touchstones like The Little Mermaid and even the origins of blue jeans. Drawing on letters, African mysticism, and centuries of suppressed history, Stewart reveals conjure as a source of rebellion, resilience, and hope. Join us to celebrate this enduring legacy and explore the magic at the heart of America’s story.
