This month we're reading "The Bear and the Nightingale" by Katherine Arden.
In the Russian wilderness, winter dominates the year, with snowdrifts towering over houses. Vasilisa spends the cold nights with her siblings, captivated by her nurse's fairy tales, especially the chilling tale of Frost, a winter demon who haunts the frigid night. While Russians fear and honor spirits that protect their homes from evil, Vasilisa's world changes after her mother dies and her father remarries. Her devout stepmother forbids them from honoring these household spirits, leaving Vasilisa uneasy about the consequences.
Soon, crops fail, dark creatures creep closer, and misfortune plagues the village. As her stepmother grows more oppressive, Vasilisa realizes she must rely on hidden powers to protect her family from a looming threat that feels like it has emerged from her nurse's darkest stories.
