This month we're reading: "Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother's Will to Survive" by Stephanie Land.
At 28, Stephanie Land’s dreams of attending university and becoming a writer were interrupted by an unexpected pregnancy. She turned to housekeeping to make ends meet while taking online classes and writing relentlessly, determined to give her daughter a better life.
In Maid, Land explores the underbelly of upper-middle-class America and what it’s like to serve them. As a cleaner, she becomes almost invisible to her clients, yet she learns much about their lives. Her journey not only sheds light on the lives of domestic workers but also gives voice to those pursuing the American Dream from below the poverty line.
