This month we will be reading "The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store" by James McBride.
In 1972, a skeleton uncovered in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, unravels long-hidden secrets from Chicken Hill, a neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side. Decades earlier, Chona Ludlow, who ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, and her husband Moshe, a Romanian-born theater owner, rallied the community to protect a deaf black child from institutionalization. As bigotry and deceit threaten the neighborhood, the story reveals how love and unity sustain those living on the margins of white Christian America, culminating in the truth behind the skeleton and the town’s buried past.
